The !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the western edge of town is a 1,423 feet tall !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . That’s 28 feet lower than the roof of the Willis Sears Tower in Chicago. But that’s still tall enough that it can be partially obscured by clouds like it was on my drive to work this morning.
The tower is basically in the middle of a corn field on the edge of town that’s actually in the middle of a bunch of new development. My commute along Pleasant View Rd takes me right past the tower, and the route is a mix of houses, apartments, farms, offices, etc. It is, in fact, a pleasant view, in spite of the high voltage power transmission lines that went up a few years ago.
The cables that hold the tower in place are anchored into massive concrete blocks in the ground. You can see some of the newer apartments and offices in the background of this picture that was taken in 2010.
The buildings around the base of the tower that house the transmitters for the 60+ different antennas on the tower have giant concrete slabs on their roofs in order to protect against giant pieces of ice that fall off the tower in the winter.
Yes, it is a very big antenna.

That’s way awesome, here in Portland we have the KGON Tower (Also called the “Stonehenge Tower” which IIRC is the tallest free-standing radio tower in the US, I have yet to actually go up to the hill to see it up close though, but if you’re a tower geek like me, google it)

Willis Sears Tower
Thank you. I was just there a few days ago, and I absolutely refuse to call it by its new name. I built the Lego model of it and threw out the “Willis Tower” sticker.

Kinda like how longtime DC residents (or former residents like myself) refuse to call National Airport, Reagan National Airport. It will always be National or DCA and never, ever Reagan. But...that’s also because we’re a bunch of hippie Democrats.

From my first link :
The tower holds more than 60 antennas for TV and radio stations, cellular phone companies and emergency services, public works and other government agencies. Most of the antennas, including WIBA-FM (101.5) and WERN-FM (88.7), are attached to the sides of the tower, but four Madison TV stations, WHA-TV (Ch. 21), WISC-TV (Ch. 3), WKOW-TV (Ch. 27) and WMSN-TV (Ch. 47), make up three orange-colored candlesticks ranging in height from 55 to 70 feet each and weighing from 10 to 20 tons.
